We grow seasonally, this means you won’t be getting things like zucchini, capsicum and eggplant in winter nor will you get snow peas in summer.

We are also developing a food forest. 

What is a Food Forest? 

Below is the list of things we grow in the market garden at ALAN foods. Not everything will always be available or available at the same time.

Basil

Availability: Summer
Type: Herb
Uses: Salads, Italian foods.
Cooking tip: add basil near the end of the cooking process to retain essence and flavour.
Storage: store in the fridge wrapped in a slightly damp paper towel.

Beans

Availability: Summer
Type: Legume
Uses: Fresh or cooked
Cooking tip: don’t cook for too long to maintain flavour and texture.
Storage: store in the crisper in the fridge in a plastic bag, they should keep for approximately 7 days

Beetroot

Availability: year round
Type: Root
Uses: cooked or raw
Cooking tip: roasting, grated raw onto salad or grate on a sandwich. The greens are edible in salads or sauteed, or juice them! We also pickle the beets, which is easy. They are awesome, keep for ages and no need to buy the tinned stuff!
Storage: store well in the fridge

Broadbean

Availability: Spring (September-November)
Type: Legume
Uses: cooked or raw, must be shelled, can be double shelled.
Cooking tip: Shell the pods, place in a bowl of boiling water, peel the individual beans for a sweet snack or addition to salad. 
Storage: keep in the fridge in their pods for approximately a week, or shell them and blanch before freezing.

Availability: spring
Type: brassica
Uses: stir-fry, boil and salads
Cooking tip: blanch and add to any plate

Cabbage

Cabbage

Availability: Spring/winter
Type: Cruciferous
Uses: coleslaw, salads, fried, steamed, sauerkraut
Cooking tip: slice finely and add it to any stir fry or salad. 
Storage: fridge, will keep for 2 weeks or more in the right conditions

Carrots

Availability: year round
Type: root
Uses: everything!
Cooking tip: greens can be used to make carrot top pesto, replace the basil with carrot tops in any receipe, slow cook them in soups or stews Roots very versatile, stirfry, roast, raw  
Storage: stores well in the fridge, remove the greens from the root immediately before storing or the greens will suck the moisture from the root

Capsicum

Availability: summer
Type: pepper
Uses: fresh or cooked
Cooking tip: slice into a salad or into your favourite stir fry. For a Harty meal, make a stuffing mix with rice and other veggies and stuff the capsicums and bake in the oven.

Cucumbers

Availability: summer
Type:
Uses: fresh in salads, salsas pickled or by them selves!
Cooking tip: probably don't cook them ey...  
Storage: in the fridge in the crisper section or in a container with a damp towel over them

Garlic

Availability: year round
Type: allium
Uses: we all know how to use garlic
Cooking tip: goes good in a roast  
Storage: dry, cool, dark place

Kang Kong

Availability: summer - autumn
Type: Asian green
Uses: stir frys
Cooking tip: Chop the thicker stems and cook them first. Throw in some asian sauces, garlic and the leaves and fry until wilted  
Storage: put the bunch in a container with water, like a bouquet of flowers. Use quickly, doesn't store well

Kale

Availability: year round
Type: Leafy Green
Uses: stir frys, juices, salads
Cooking tip: Bake in the oven to make kale chips, add to your stir fry or pasta to give it a super nutrient boost.

Microgreens

Availability: Year Round
Type: Microgreen
Uses: a super nutritious lettuce replacement or a fancy garnish to any dish.
Cooking tip: don't cook them...  
Storage: best placed in a Tupperware container with a paper towel in the bottom

Onions

Availability: summer-autumn
Type: allium
Uses: you know how to use onions....
 
Storage: store in a cool, dry, dark place

Radish

Availability: spring-autumn
Type: root vegetable related to the Brassica family
Uses: mostly raw in salads
Cooking tip: roast with garlic and parsley  
Storage: in the fridge

Rainbow Chard

Availability: year round
Type: swiss chard - unrelated to spinach
Uses: should be cooked, not eaten raw.
Cooking tip: chop the stems and cook them first, then add the leaves. Stir fry with some lemon juice and balsamic vinegar as a side to any meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner)  
Storage: in the fridge wrapped loosely in plastic, will store for a few days this way.

Availability: year round
Type: Brassica
Uses: salads
Cooking tip: can be made into a pesto, with garlic, pine nuts, olive oil, salt and parmesan  
Storage: keep it in the bag in the fridge. Our bags are home compostable!

Uses: salads

Squash

Availability: summer
Type: Cucurbita Pepo
Uses: can be roasted, pan fried, spiralized, or steamed.
Cooking tip: we like cutting them into 1cm slices and frying or grilling them in a pan or barbecue.

Swedes

Availability: cool season
Type: root, bulb, breassica
Uses: edible greens similar to kale in flavour and use, can be boiled and mashed, made into fritters and fried, roasted/baked
Cooking tip: peel, slice and pan fry, mash with potatoes, roast or make into fritters.  
Storage: they store well, similar to potatoes.
